$13K for three items at Barneys?

August 15, 2007 at 7:53 am by Kristi Gustafson

victoria1.jpgWe get this e-mail here each day called “The Dirt” from the people at People. The tidbits are all celebrity-related, and this is no celeb blog, but this is related to fashion and shopping, so … here you go.

David Beckham got a private tour of the White House last Thursday. Meanwhile, wife Victoria is spending her days shopping. In Touch reports she recently spent over $13,000 on three items at Barney’s in L.A. and has been offered a $5 million credit limit at Neiman Marcus.

I like to shop, but can not imagine spending $13,000 on three pieces of clothing- even if I had that kind of money. That just seems excessive. Not to mention, I did a quick scan of theBarney’s Web site and can not put together three things that total that kind of money - unless we’re talking jewelry.

Desk-top calculators (Nov, 1970)

Only $349, what a bargain! Of course that’s roughly $1900 in 2007 dollars so you could buy a pretty nice computer for that price. Who exactly spent that much money on a four function calculator?

Desk-top calculators
Here’s a handy item to keep at your fingertips. Despite the simplicity of the keyboard, this 12-digit calculator can perform all the basic functions and, in addition, multiply with a constant and carry forward a grand total. It’s $349 from Casio Enterprises, Long Island City, N.Y. 11101.

How to Make Money Online

By on Apr 18, 2008

This post was inspired by a recent display of inadequacy by so called teachers in the Make Money Online blogging niche.

Provide Value

The answer to the question of how do I make money online is actually quite a simple one, and yet it requires a tremendous amount of dedication (and not an insignificant amount of skill) if you really want to succeed in the long run.

If you want to generate revenue online, it is no different to anything else. You have to find a need, then fill it with something of value.

It can involve anything from creating your own product to freelancing, online retailing, or affiliate marketing (there are many ways to do it), but you must never be sucked into the idea that it will be quick, or easy.

It is therefore unfortunate that many of those who choose to “impart their knowledge” by offering a helping hand when getting started, are largely severely underqualified, and often mis-leading.

Research, but carefully

The one thing you’ll need to do above all else initially, is research. And this is where you have to be very careful about what you read. Blogs that simply claim to help people make money online rarely manage to do so. At best, they are a collection of tips from an individual who is still learning themselves, and at worst they are the domain of a self-obsessed ego. There is a very high signal to noise ratio, with lots of recycled content, and less than professional commentary.

The other thing to consider is this. If a blog is branded as being in the make money online niche, then this implies that they are attempting to be a jack of all trades. If they had real expertise, why would they not create a blog that specifically centered on that expertise?

It should serve as a first warning sign, although it is not always the case that such a blog will be written by someone without expertise in one or more areas.

Conclusion

Look for those people who are experts in what they do - for example, do they offer examples of failure / success, and case studies? Remember that most people who make a living online do not run a generalised make money online blog, and it would be wise to take what is written on them with a big pinch of salt.

Ashlee Simpson pregnant

Ashlee Simpson and Pete WentzAshlee Simpson is pregnant, it has been claimed.

The 23-year-old singer — who recently announced her engagement to rocker Pete Wentz –  is expecting her first child with the Fall Out Boy star, according to Us Weekly magazine.

“We are thrilled to confirm their engagement and congratulate this happy couple,” a spokesperson for the couple said. “Beyond that there is nothing to say.”

Simpson and Wentz, 28, started dating in late 2006.

“They are ecstatic and can’t wait to be man and wife,” a source said. “They will be getting married before the end of the year.”

Wentz said earlier this month that he was open to marriage.

“When you find someone you think is your soulmate, it’s inevitable,” he said.

Simpson’s rep had no comment on the reported pregnancy.

A new store, Design.99, is planning to open at 10022 Joseph Campau on September 1.

The Detroit Free Press printed a follow-up on the city council primary. Below: The scene outside City Hall when results were distributed.

Hamtramck police had to break up the street party at PLAV 10 because the organizer didn’t get a permit from Wayne County. From pictures on the internet, it looks like the show was moved to Wayne Metro’s parking lot.

A representative from the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency lobbied for missile defense installations in Poland at Polonia restaurant.

MSHDA is accepting applications for Cities of Promise/MSHDA/LISC AmeriCorps positions; two half time positions that offer a living stipend of approximately $9,000 each, and two full time positions approximately $18,000/year plus benefits. Workers also receive an educational stipend of $4,725 for full-time members and $2,362.50 for half-time members at the end of service. Members must be willing to travel and need to have reliable transportation. Candidates already living in the COP cities are strongly encouraged to apply. Deadline for application submission is August 22, 2007. Interviews will began the week of August 27th. Call Louis Vinson at 517-335-6681 for further information about the positions; or send him an email.

South of the railroad tracks, both burned buildings near the jail have been demolished. Parking lots left over from the days of Dodge Main have been cleared completely, and trailers are being moved in.

Crain’s Detroit Business explains how recent college graduates can buy houses in Hamtramck with low-rate MSHDA loans. Crain’s also recognized the immigrant community’s contribution to development in Hamtramck, but did not mention any immigrant driven developments.

Amy Winehouse smokes her life away

By Dana Loesch
01/22/2008 1:16 pm

The Sun has obtained video footage of everyone’s favorite hot mess, Amy Winehouse, smoking crack. Is it wrong to be glad that someone took footage and leaked it to the press? As an example of what NOT to do?
WinehouseIsn’t it wrong to hide it, to play up her music and encourage fans, some of whom are kids? You can’t romanticize what you see in these frames. There is no fist-in-the-air aesthetic to it, no glamour. All you see is a scary-thin girl with a drug-addled complexion prattling on in non-sequiturs, dependent upon a poor person’s drug. There is no trace of the bluesy diva expected to perform at this year’s Grammys. Clips like this one grab society by the brass and stop it from looking the other way.

vincent van gogh letters of vincent van gogh extreme poverty galina trams

Schwedenplatz.jpg

I like red and green. In Graz the trams are green, and here in Vienna they are red.

I guess too much sitting with pictures makes me asocial.

After many hours of privacy I find it

difficult to bareprolonged small talks

I read yesterday letters of Vincent van Gogh to his brother.

He knew himselfhe was wild and asocial, and also knew he would

stay in state of extreme poverty till the end of his life.

He wrote that painting was hard physical work

Only he himself knew true value of his art at that time.

It is the same with all of us

Only we ourselves can estimate our own efforts

We go forward, not because others value or don’t value us
