This post was inspired by a recent display of inadequacy by so called teachers in the Make Money Online blogging niche.
Provide Value
The answer to the question of how do I make money online is actually quite a simple one, and yet it requires a tremendous amount of dedication (and not an insignificant amount of skill) if you really want to succeed in the long run.
If you want to generate revenue online, it is no different to anything else. You have to find a need, then fill it with something of value.
It can involve anything from creating your own product to freelancing, online retailing, or affiliate marketing (there are many ways to do it), but you must never be sucked into the idea that it will be quick, or easy.
It is therefore unfortunate that many of those who choose to “impart their knowledge” by offering a helping hand when getting started, are largely severely underqualified, and often mis-leading.
Research, but carefully
The one thing you’ll need to do above all else initially, is research. And this is where you have to be very careful about what you read. Blogs that simply claim to help people make money online rarely manage to do so. At best, they are a collection of tips from an individual who is still learning themselves, and at worst they are the domain of a self-obsessed ego. There is a very high signal to noise ratio, with lots of recycled content, and less than professional commentary.
The other thing to consider is this. If a blog is branded as being in the make money online niche, then this implies that they are attempting to be a jack of all trades. If they had real expertise, why would they not create a blog that specifically centered on that expertise?
It should serve as a first warning sign, although it is not always the case that such a blog will be written by someone without expertise in one or more areas.
Conclusion
Look for those people who are experts in what they do - for example, do they offer examples of failure / success, and case studies? Remember that most people who make a living online do not run a generalised make money online blog, and it would be wise to take what is written on them with a big pinch of salt.
