New Year Video

I finished editing the footage from our New Year 2008 celebration. I figured I’d post it here. I’m sure it’s going to be boring for most of our visitors, but I just want to give the link to my parents. )

Pingbacks

Problematic and Good PingbacksArtem has made a post with a pingback to our blog today. When I saw it appear in the comments section looking all nice and clean I remembered that for some reason my pingbacks always come out completely screwed up.

I started digging the WP code to see how it grabs the excerpt. Turns out that you need to have some kind of important tag separating your actual post text with your header and comment sections, so it wouldn’t grab those. Also it turned out that DIV is not one of those important tags. P however is.

It took me a while to realize that, but I must say that I impressed myself. All should be well now.

Professional Mexican Wrestler Vows To Help Protect Pacific Coastline

Filed under: animals, campaigns, sports, television — michael @ 6:34 pm

el_santo.jpgWhile I’ve yet to see the Jack Black movie, Nacho Libre, its take on the Mexican Wrestling league, or Lucha Libre, has me interested. At least, that’s what I can gather from the trailer. Giving me even more impetus to subject myself to a movie that may be only remotely funny is news today that professional Mexican wrestler, Hijo del Santo (”Son of the Saint”), is laying an eco-smackdown on the Pacific coastline. The silver masked hero pledged yesterday “to devote the greater part of this year to raising consciousness about how human actions are threatening the ocean.” From the article,

“The wrestler, son of Mexico’s most famous fighter, El Santo, will aid the U.S.-based nongovernmental organization WildCoast with its campaign to stop sea turtle consumption in Mexico, defend protected areas on California’s coast and promote saving the gray whales in Baja California.

`I began to worry, to become interested, and I was affected very much by the statistics on what is happening,” Hijo del Santo told a news conference that included the presentation of a mock movie trailer announcing `Santo vs. the Enemies of the Sea.”’

To raise awarness for the issues facing residents, El Hijo will visit coastal communities in Northern Mexico and distribute comics featuring his wrestling character battling threats to the ocean. From the article,

“His latest venture reflects a long tradition in Mexico, where legions of the leotard-wearing wrestlers have participated in everything from presidential campaigns to battles for affordable housing.”

YES! This is what we need. More heroes in the fight against climate change, pollution, Hummers, and giant lizards! We need people to dress up, grab a mic, and start preaching the good green word. Nothing says ‘Look at me!” like a man in spandex and colorful accessories. Of course, nothing says, “Throw me in jail” like that either. I commend El Hijo and hope he considers a trip state-side to help additional communities face the realities of a troubled ocean ecosystem. The world needs heroes. Jack Black, get that costume ready!

The Thorpedo Sets His Sights On Climate Change Action

Filed under: sports, television — michael @ 9:49 am

ianthorpe.jpgAustralian Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe — aka, The ‘Thorpedo’ — is entering early retirement by channeling his energy into helping people understand the dangers of climate change. In a new green documentary called Fish Out of Water, the athlete “goes on a journey of discovery in the Australian environment, visiting coal mines near Newcastle, scuba-dives over bleached coral reefs, hikes through doomed old-growth forests in Tasmania and takes in some of his country’s most picturesque landscapes where the effects of climate change are all too obvious.”

More than 800 hours of footage was recorded for the special. From the article,

“‘I’ve always been passionate about the environment and how we treat it, how we can do better, and the more I read and talk to experts, the more I realize we can really make a difference,’ Thorpe says. ‘I’ve never thought I didn’t make the right decision (to retire), there have been thoughts about what I would do with the rest of my life. But I’ve found something I’m really passionate about with this.’”

Good on ya, Ian. We look forward to checking out the special when its released later this year. Hit the jump for more.

The Future of Web Apps Summit

If you’re going to be down in the Bay Area on September 13th or 14th, grab yourself a ticket to the Carson Workshops “Future of Web Apps” Summit and come discuss what changes are in store for the web applications and services of tomorrow.

I’ll be the lone idiot on the bill, surrounded by the likes of The Crunchmaster, The Diggmaster, The FlickrMastr and several others.

I’m extremely psyched about this particular conference not only for its interesting and relevant subject matter, but also because it’s the first conference in about a year where I haven’t drawn “the hangover slot”… or, the first session of the morning. My session will be between 5pm and 5:45pm on September 13th and we’ll be talking about user-driven content. Particularly, what about it is working, what about it isn’t working, and what the current state of things can teach us about where the whole movement is going. It’s also the last session of the day so after it’s over, we can all walk over to a bar and user-generate some drinks. We can even use the wisdom of the crowds to decide what to order. Should be fun!

Relevance Test or Relevancy Test

Filed under:

— Chris

I’m taking a little survey. When one is evaluating search results, is that called a relevance test or a relevancy test?

  1. It doesn’t matter. Just call it a “relevance test” and move forward. :)

  2. ain’t dey synonyms?

    Comment by jbl — 9/20/2007 @ 5:56 pm

  3. Around here we call it a “Test to see if the user is really getting what they want to see test” We find that this adds clarity that is missing from the terms “Relevance” and “Relevancy”.

    Comment by Doug — 9/20/2007 @ 6:05 pm

  4. I say both are fine. Depends on how fond of using the letter “Y” you are. I suppose you could say that if the subject of your test is relevance, then it is a relevance test, and if the subject of the test is a particular thing, and you want to know its relevance in relation to various other things, that would be a relevancy test of said thing. I’d say they’re really the same, though, because you could kind of reverse that argument.

  5. Hmm. What was the question again?

  6. Is it a Bird or a Flower? Doesn’t matter what it is…. get’er done.

  7. i think it’s irrelevant.

    Comment by john — 9/24/2007 @ 8:12 pm

  8. […] The results to my survey about whether it’s a relevance test or a relevancy test are inconclusive. So let’s all agree to call it a reltest. […]
